Why ADAS Calibration Matters

Why ADAS Calibration Matters After a Winter Accident

A winter collision can leave more than a dent or cracked bumper. On many newer vehicles, cameras and sensors sit behind the windshield, grille, bumper or body panels. Even when the visible damage looks minor, the repair may need to account for the driver assistance systems those components support.

What is ADAS?

ADAS stands for advanced driver assistance systems. Depending on the vehicle, these features may include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring and parking assistance. They use cameras, radar and other sensors to gather information about the road and nearby vehicles.

Why can a minor bumper hit matter?

A low speed slide into a snowbank or another vehicle may seem straightforward to repair. But if the impact affects a sensor, its mounting point or a nearby panel, the damage may go beyond what you can see from the outside.

That’s why a repair assessment may include checking for hidden damage and reviewing the vehicle maker’s procedures. If calibration is required, it helps ensure the affected system is set up to operate as intended after repairs are complete. Not every collision calls for the same checks or calibration; the vehicle and the work being done determine what’s needed.

Winter adds another layer

Snow, slush and road salt can make damage harder to assess at first glance. An impact with a curb or snowbank may also affect areas beneath the vehicle. Once repairs begin, the shop may find damage that wasn’t visible during the initial inspection, which can change the estimate or timeline.

What should you ask your repair facility?

After a winter accident, a few questions can help you understand the full repair:

  • Could there be damage behind the bumper or beneath the vehicle?
  • Does my vehicle have cameras or sensors near the damaged area?
  • Will the repair require diagnostic scans or ADAS calibration?
  • If additional damage is found, how will it affect the estimate and timing?

Take photos of the damage and surrounding conditions, and keep your insurance claim information handy. If the estimate changes after the vehicle is taken apart, ask your repair facility to walk you through what they found.
